Amanda,

Ive lived in this country for over 13 years. 3 altercations is nothing. Obvisouly your one of those gaijin that live in some fantasy world that is distanced from reality; Im thinking a Eikawia teacher? The thing you dont know or understand about Japs is that they show fake respect to a gaijin sensei, but an average Joe like this dude in the story or me they could give a 2 shiot about. If you dont believe, go down to Hello Work, get one of the hundreds of shiotty factory jobs available that Japs dont want, and work there minnimum 2 years. You will see the light real fast. They really dont respect the eikaiwa sensei, they just know your naive and you wont be here long term. Japs are capable of some mean shiot and now I know why they did what they did in WW2. Ever visited Yasukuni Jinja? Ever read that shiot they got up in there? Thats how alot of Japan really feels in his soul. I dont hate them, I just dont live in a fantasy land like you anymore. One Jap dude at work told me that the shachos in Japan just think of the gaijin worker as a machine. I think this is true after some of the experiences I have had, Im just labor that is to be exploited. So what the taxi driver got his ass beat? A few years earlier I would complain but now I dont care. I dont go out much any more cause I cant stand Japs, the way they talk and look at me and their dependent goofy attitudes. Sure I got some Jap friends and wife but I know the deal here.

To this author - if you've had three altercations with Japanese people in Japan, mate, there's something wrong with you. Good luck with the huge amount of work you clearly have to do on your personality.

Interesting story George and I suspect we might be from the same country. I think that the taxi driver did lie and completely fabricated a large amount of the story but the thing I always remember here is that it's not my country and 99% of the time your word will not be believed in a 50/50 situation. Now the fact that you made the first aggressive moves by swearing at him and by reaching for the screen and grabbing his phone puts you at a complete disdvantage. when it comes to you saying you "fell on him" and that's why his head was bleeding.
Wherever you are in the world, generally and I say generally not always if someone is bleeding from a wound and they say you attacked them. You have a hell of a job proving your innocence. Now he is a liar but a lot of people do lie especially when enraged.
I think in such a situation you have to rely on being able to prove yourself what happened not really on the taxi driver to tell the truth. Like you said he was an asshole and your actions gave hime a chance to be even more of an asshole
I think in all fairness you got off lightly.

Hm, finally caught up with this and it's been an extremely fascinating read. While I know about the prejudices that can arise in a foreign country, this police system seems pretty outrageous [esp not being able to contact anyone]. I wonder how different this process would be for a woman. While I don't ever plan on being arrested in Japan, I am curious to how a woman would be treated in the same situation [maybe not the drunken behavior leading to an accidental violent act, but something that would land her in the temporary prison]. While I feel bad that "George" had to go through these experiences, I am grateful he took the time to write them all down as this has proved infinitely interesting.

Yes, I initially thought that George was just another freak gaijin, but yesterday I experienced a driver from Shibuya to my house just like the guy that you explain here! He was about 60 (no punch perm though) but was a complete jerk. It was in the middle of the day, and no one was drunk. Once he realised I was a gaijin, he tried to speed off, but I already had the door open. He obviously didn't want my money, so I got out of the car at the next traffic lights after he started muttering about gaijins.. "kono kuso gaijin-me" was the exact words. I don't care what they think, if I am the paying customer, I will not take that crap from anyone. Violence is not the right way, but I certainly felt like throttling the fellow (although, obviously I didn't).
