I like these summaries. I’ve heard of foreign men, presidents of their own start-ups, who give presentations and during the Q&A start talking about their failed marriages with Japanese women. Thanks for the warning, guys. Catholics get free pre-marital counseling before tying the knot. Mine was a good experience, and I’m glad that my J-wife and I go to the same church.

I’ve read the book and can tell you that it offers great insights into the simple differences between men and women, obvious differences we all take for granted.

I never considered how being a man, it was our nature to simplify and rationalise most things in order to resolve conflict situations. Women on the other hand are less interested in rationalising in order to solve a problem, but rather interested in sharing their emotions, to try and relieve themselves and achieve some reassurance and feelings of security.

I do not intend to get married in the near future, but I will definitely consider the teachings of this book and pre-marital counselling for when I eventually decide to tie the knot.

I think premarital counseling is a great idea in any culture.
One thing any foreigner ought to read before getting married to a Japanese national is this website: http://crnjapan.com/en/
There are basically no Japanese laws protecting a foreign parent’s rights if the marriage results in children and ends in divorce. I was lucky enough to divorce in the US and share custody of my child with my ex. The relationship between us is now basically non-existent, which is weird but ok, since we at least both spend equal time with our child.

Wow, this has been an interesting article It never crossed my mind that there’d be marriage counceling in Japan, as as far as I knew they weren’t all that keen on counceling in general…
