Thanks Red, I changed the title after reading your comment (ok etag?), as I think this needs to be mentioned. I have tried Namimail too, and I was expecting the reason why the Blackberry is so late to come to Japan, was that DoCoMo was developing something better for Japanese language input... I was wrong it seems... How hard can it be..?

I found a page that details the expected spec for the new Blackberry 8707 to be released in Japan. Good old DoCoMo... they're releasing a Blackberry that can't write Japanese! Apparently you can read Japanese (like most Blackberry's available overseas anyway) but the market has got to be pretty limited without an input function. DoCoMo USA offers a plugin called namimail which enables Blackberry users in any country to type Japanese. I've been testing it out for the last few months but I'm quite unimpressed. Not only is the interface extremely difficult to use, it regularly MOJIBAKEs when sent to Japanese keitais and other domestic email addresses. What's more they charge you a monthly service fee. Big thumbs down from me.
